The Right Honourable Mr Balendra Shah (aka Balen) assumed office as Prime Minister of the Government of Nepal on 27 March 2026. His party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), secured a near two-thirds majority in the general elections to the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament held on 5 March 2026. He serves as a senior leader of the party.Building on his impactful tenure as Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (2022–2025), Prime Minister Shah brings a clear vision centred on innovation, transparency, good governance and efficient public service delivery. His rise to the premiership reflects a growing public demand for fresh leadership, pragmatic solutions to citizens’ needs and aspirations, renewed trust in state institutions and a transformative approach to Nepal’s economic growth and overall development.

Career and Rise to Politics

Prior to entering politics, Prime Minister Shah gained prominence in Nepal’s music industry as a rapper and lyricist known for his socially and politically conscious work. His music addressed issues such as inequality, corruption and governance inefficiencies, resonating strongly with young people and conveying a message of reform and change. This cultural influence laid the foundation for his emergence as a national voice, first as Mayor of Kathmandu and subsequently as Prime Minister. Through his professional and public engagements, he developed first-hand insight into key governance challenges, including urban management and infrastructure deficits.

As Mayor, he led significant urban governance and city development initiatives, with a strong emphasis on infrastructure improvement, waste management, heritage conservation and efficient public service delivery.His electoral successes are widely viewed as reflecting public disillusionment with traditional party politics and a clear demand for a more innovative, accountable and results-oriented approach to governance.

Academic Background and Professional Profile

Prime Minister Shah holds a Master’s degree (M.Tech) in Structural Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka, India, and a Bachelor’s degree (B.E.) in Civil Engineering from Purwanchal University, Nepal. During his academic years, he developed a strong foundation in urban planning, construction and infrastructure development, which has informed his approach as a policymaker and urban reformer. His academic and research interests include heritage conservation, structural preservation, tourism-driven economic development and traditional Newa architecture.

A civil engineer by profession, he possesses expertise in structural design and analysis, project management, urban planning and governance. He has worked across 65 of Nepal’s 77 districts and made significant contributions to post-2015 earthquake reconstruction efforts. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Structural Engineering at Kathmandu University, focusing on the conservation of Newa structures in the Kathmandu Valley to promote heritage tourism and economic development.

Personal Life and Interests

Prime Minister Shah has maintained a strong interest in music and poetry from a young age. His first self-written single, Sadak Balak, was released in 2012, and he gained wider recognition in 2013 through his participation in the YouTube battle rap series Raw Barz. He has composed more than 25 songs and is widely respected for his candid lyrics and insightful social commentary. He has also published a collection of poetry titled Ashra. His cultural influence complements his political leadership, enhancing Nepal’s soft power while enabling him to engage with and inspire a broad segment of society. His latest rap release, Jay Mahakaali, reflects themes of youth, cultural heritage and national pride.

Prime Minister Shah is married to Ms Sabina Kafle, and they have a daughter.
